Komen Acadiana announces Kathy Idol as its 2010 Honorary Team New Balance Member.

Katherine Idol was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001 and underwent a double mastectomy and reconstruction, putting on a brave face for her family, even though she was newly single, living alone and still reeling from a recent divorce.

Katherine began educating others about breast cancer and advocating for a cure almost immediately. She allowed her daughter to use photos of her reconstruction for nursing class projects, joined in Relay for Life races, and, when she moved to Acadiana in 2007, she and her family formed their own Race for the Cure team: Team Idol.

Thanks to support from her generous employer, Borden’s, Team Idol won the award for Largest Friends and Family team at the 2009 race. Their team boasted 120 members and included 7 breast cancer survivors. Today, Katherine has been cancer free for almost nine years, and she continues to support those in our community who are battling breast cancer.

Celebrating Acadiana Survivors

Every year, the highlight of the Race is celebrating the many brave men and women who have won their fight against breast cancer.  Nearly 350 Acadiana breast cancer survivors joined us on race day.  These women and men are Komen's inspiration to achieve our vision of a world without breast cancer.
