    2011 Honorary Race Chairs

    David & Debbie Chaney

The Acadiana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is excited to announce David and Debbie Chaney as this year's Honorary Race Chairs at the upcoming Race for the Cure®. The Chaneys have been dedicated supporters of Komen Acadiana since Debbie's successful battle against the breast cancer.

The Chaney's "co-survivorship" will be celebrated at the race, Saturday, March 19 in Girard Park.

Co-survivor is a term used by Komen to define the strength, support, and love that friends and family show to their loved ones with breast cancer. David and Debbie's story is like that of many co-survivors. When Debbie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 during her first mammogram, she was shocked and afraid. Her husband David was there for her during her battle.

"You hate to see someone you love go through this," David said. "I just let her know I'd be there."

Debbie has used her experience with breast cancer to reach out to friends and family to let them know that early detection is important. When she was first diagnosed, she turned to her faith for strength. "I had a God-given sense of calm. I thought, ‘I have to be a good role model for my kids and family,' and I had a sense of peace from my head to my toes. I knew that God was going to take care of me."

This year, in addition to hosting a Race for the Cure team, the Chaneys are donating a portion of the proceeds from David's Just 4 Kicks soccer camp funds to Komen Acadiana. The Chaneys have two children: son Logan, 12 and daughter Madison, 9. Debbie is a freelance court reporter and David is middle school athletic director for Ascension Episcopal School and operates Just 4 Kicks soccer camps each summer.
