    2010-11 Grantees

The Acadiana Affiliate granted over $364,000 to fund the following programs in 2010-11:

Acadiana Medical Research Foundation, Louisiana Breast and Cervical Health Program. This is a program run by Louisiana Oncology Associates to provide breast health screenings and screening mammograms to women who meet age, income and insurance status guidelines.  Facilities that will perform the mammograms have agreed to accept payment at Medicare rates.  Serving Acadia, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry and Vermilion parishes.

Iberia Comprehensive Community Health Center, Inc., 2010 ICCHC Mammogram Access Program. The purpose of the ICCHC Preventive Breast Cancer Services Access program is to improve access to early breast cancer detection services to vulnerable populations of Iberia, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes.  Key activities of this program will include mammography services for uninsured women over the age of 40 who haven't had a mammogram in the past year and breast health education with a focus on the African American community through partnerships with local churches.  We expect the program to provide mammography services to approximately 350 women, diagnostic testing for 7 women with abnormal mammograms and reach 500 women through our education initiative.  Serving Iberia, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes.

Iberia Medical Center Foundation, First Friday.   Iberia Medical Center Foundation currently offers a hospital-based outreach and education-based program, First Friday, providing 60 no-cost mammogram screenings to eligible residents of Iberia Parish and educating on breast health at an annual Women's Symposium.  With this grant, we would target 150 more of the uninsured and underinsured individuals for screening mammograms.  Our efforts are aimed at educating women and the community on the importance of early screenings, self-awareness, community resources and public support for the cure.  In the month of October, we will host a First Friday luncheon for the community with educational speakers and a survivor fashion show.  Community events will follow throughout the month to promote breast health education and the resources available to our community.  Serving St. Martin and Vermilion parishes.

Lafayette Community Health Care Clinic, Mammograms for Life 2010-2011. The Clinic provides non-emergency healthcare services to low income, working, uninsured Lafayette Parish residents at no cost to the patients.  Since 2002, grants from the Acadiana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure have enabled the Clinic to provide its Mammograms for Life program which provides breast imaging procedures to aid in the diagnosis of breast disease.  In 2010, the Clinic expects to provide at least 175 breast imaging procedures to more than 150 women who may otherwise not have access to these potentially life-saving services.  Serving Lafayette Parish.

Lydia Cancer Association, Breast Cancer: Awareness, Early Detection & Treatment Assistance.  The purpose of this program is to lower breast cancer mortality rates of at-risk population in a four parish service area.  Activities include two breast cancer awareness events, providing mammograms to 12 clients and providing funds to supplement prescriptions, medical expenses and transportation.   Serving Iberia, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes.

Miles Perret Cancer Services, Living Well with Breast Cancer. MPCS was established as a place of hope and healing for cancer clients and their families.  We believe that through programs and services of support, all cancer patients can improve and enhance their recovery, and thus, "live well" with and after cancer.  All support services and programs are designed with this and our mission, "to serve families in Acadiana, fighting and surviving cancer, with care and compassion."  The many benefits available include a comforting environment, breast cancer specific information, education, support, transportation assistance, medication assistance, oral supplements, medical supplies, bras, prosthesis, wigs, turbans, nutrition counseling, exercise classes and many other resources.  Serving Acadia, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes.

Miles Perret Cancer Services, Transportation for MPCS Breast Cancer Patients. The MPCS Mobile Unit travels throughout our twelve parish service area, which includes the Komen Affiliate service area.  The Mobile Unit is staffed by a trained Service Coordinator and offers the same services that are available at the Center.  Serving Acadia, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes.

Opelousas General Health System, Paint the Town Pink. OGHS seeks resources to help support a hospital based outreach breast cancer awareness program that offers education and no-cost mammograms/ultrasounds with readings in St. Landry Parish for eligible women with little or no heal insurance.  OGHS will host a "Paint the Town Pink" campaign to include a pink bag luncheon, community and hospital decorating contest and 5 foot pink ribbons available to be displayed around the parish.  We will work with high school students by working with health instructors providing teaching tools, speakers and handouts for the students to share with their families.  Serving St. Landry Parish.

Sallie Astor Burdine Breast Foundation Lafayette Affiliate, Radiation Cost Assistance for Breast Cancer Patients. The Foundation is requesting funds for financial assistance to breast cancer patients for radiation treatment costs while they are undergoing radiation therapy.  Our target is to assist up to 50 breast cancer patients with up to $1,000 each to pay for uncovered expenses for radiation treatment.  Serving Acadia, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes.

Sallie Astor Burdine Breast Foundation Lafayette Affiliate,  Ancillary Services Required as a result of Radiation Therapy for Breast Cancer Patients. The Foundation is requesting funds to provide assistance of up to 50 breast cancer patients with costs for ancillary services required as a result of cancer treatment, in particular radiation therapy.  Costs may include transportation, prescriptions, over the counter medications, treatment for side effects, diagnostic or other follow up scans or tests and physical therapy.  Our target is to assist up to 50 breast cancer patients with up to $500 each.  Serving Acadia, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes.

Sallie Astor Burdine Breast Foundation Lafayette Affiliate, Gentlewaves Treatment - New Iberia. The Foundation will team with OncoLogics, Inc. to continue Gentlewaves treatment for breast cancer patients in New Iberia.  Breast cancer patients receiving Gentlewaves treatment, while undergoing radiation treatment, have increased protection from skin reactions.  Patients who experience skin reactions are sometimes forced to halt treatment temporarily under the skin heals, which reduces the effectiveness of treatment.  Key activities include administering the treatment and educating patients about treatment availability.  Serving Iberia, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes.

Southwest LA Primary Health Care Center, Inc., Southwest La. Primary Health Care Center, Inc. Breast Care Fund. The purpose is to emphasize the need for monthly breast self-exams, annual mammograms, screenings and stressing increased self-care responsibilities, along with provider care.  Serving St. Landry Parish.
